It is a real measurement and you can find LOTS of posts about it in ThumperTalk amongst other places.
I would just say this since you are getting started. Keep it simple. Use factory parts. Clean the carb and the PV. Use the recommended mix and check regularly to make sure you have a good burn.
And never combine a 6-pack and dremel tool when trying to figure out how to get more power with porting!

it's a measurement of tdc to head clearance. I'm just learning all of this too. I've got a yz250 completely apart right now and have learned just enough to know I don't know crud! Age has nothing to do with it. you know the BAP drill!!
Replacing factory with factory is a 'safe' bet with me for certain things such as gaskets. I do replace some items with proven aftermarket parts. ie pistons, reeds
I'm pretty sure that once you clean the PV, change your pilot and make sure you don't have a leak, you will find a big difference in the bike.

lol dremel and beer, i could see how that would lead to potentially irreversible cylinder modifications! im guilty of taking out the drill and swiss cheezing parts in order to "lighten" them.. this usually happens on fri or sat nights and jimmy beam is often a partner in crime. new policy in the shop is no drills, no dremel, and no hand grinders after midnight. wife and neighbors like the new policies too.

Watch out for Mr. Beam. Heard he has a masters degree in engineering.
Glad to know that I'm not the only person who has the ability to turn on lights inside of neighbors houses after midnight by making a little 'too much' noise. LOL

Connor-----any up date on your bike?? Did you get the power valve working right? If so did that fix it? If not make sure you do not have some kind of air leak somewhere in the intake. If all that is good it is time to give the carb a real good look.
