It's not an automatic bump. TORN usually goes over the lap times and bumps from those. Top 3 in each class at the year end will get something

I believe anyone who finishes # 1 in ANY class should be promoted to the next class no matter how their lap times are compared to the next class. Since they have accomplished being #1 in a class they should be expected to learn to do the same in the next class, just as the riders in their previous class are trying to do! Seems only fair. This is not a cheap sport, and if someone has to continuously compete against a person that has already won the class, it just doesn't make sense.
Many people, including myself, say that we do this for the fun of it, in as much as this may be somewhat true,it all changes on the starting line!

My sons finished 7th and 10th in the 125 am this year. They now have the experience of racing, and I plan on them running in the 125 int. next year, that to me is the way it should be. This class also was fairly large with 15 to 20 riders at each race.

For what it is worth, it bothers me when someone who has been racing more than a couple of years or who finishes top 5 in an amateur class stays amateur. Shouldn't the lowest class be for people new to riding/racing or who are just beginning to get good enough to finish some races in 5th - 10th place? I met a guy in my class (Over38AM) who told me, "I have been racing motocross for 20 years." Well good for you! What about us who just got started and finish 18th because the top 10 riders (who are by any standard "intermediate") choose to stick around for a trophy? Their excuse is that they can't win in the intermediate class. Whatever.
TA, Your exactly right on with this. Doesn't seem "right" that some of the riders in the class you mentioned could easily compete in an int. or even higher class. I heard the same thing you did several times this season. That class is HUGE early in the year and towards the end of the season it dwindled to a smaller number, wonder why? Maybe the thought of "I don't have a chance" so why try. I probably will be publicly admonished for this but some need to do the right thing and move up.

If you finish in the top five you need to consider to bump up. But as far as years of experience. This is my fourth year racing. The best finish I have had is 11th. If you look at my lap times I would be in the way and be a hazard if I bumped to intermediate. Curtis bumps people by their times and ability not how many years we have rode. I have stated before It really would be great if we had a novice class for beginners. I know a few people that have come out to watch and the starts alone scare them to not even try it. Todd 590W

Well there is one problem with ya'lls theory........some people just never get fast enough to move out of the amateurs. Look at my class. Most of us are no where near the intermediates. I finished 2nd this season. Should I be bumped? Believe me if I was ever fast enough to stay in the same zip code as the intermediates I wouldn't wait to be bumped. I would just move myself. Gary 415w has been in that class for the last 4 years and he got his best finish ever last race with a 7th. Some people can come into the class and be running in the next level by mid season. Some of us will be carrer amateurs. The only way to do bumps is by lap times. If a person runs lap times that are compariable to the next level then they need to be bumped. Now you do get the occasional sand bagger who just races the class because they know it will be an easy win. Actually that happens more often than not. That's not really winning is it?

"Well there is one problem with ya'lls theory........" Liss, Note that I said some, not all. I agree with you that lap times should be the deciding factor but their should also be a skill consideration to. I, just like your Gary, will probably be in the same boat in 2-3 years - just struggling to make the top 10, but at least it will be in the O45 class (only 1 more yearr of O38!, but that class is fast too).
