My son's 2000 PW50 has been running rich since we got it. After cleaning/inspecting the carburetor I have found a couple of issues.

1. The choke was stuck - due to the slide in the carb. being stuck. It is moving fine now but, if I put on the choke when the bike is running it doesn't stall out.
2. The air screw doesn't have much of any effect on the idle, etc. (unless it is less than 1 turn out - then it stalls)

It runs but is lacking in power and won't "clean itself out" when throttled up.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rob

Some of those little bike have a exhaust restrictor. That might be giving you trouble.
Good luck

clean the silencer......... or just take it off..... your exhaust is plugged and that is why it won't run properly in the upper rpm's......

they also come extremely rich from the factory. drop a 67.5 main jet in there. also clean the pilot circuit. the air screw should have tons of adjustment. the air screw unlike most bikes affects the entire range on the pw50. if you don't get any change when moving the screw around then clean the pilot circuit.

check compression they are known for killing rings on the exhaust port side due to no cooling once mud gets stuck in the fins.

Thanks - The jet is on order and I'll check the pilot circuit and compression!

did you clean your silencer yet!!!?

I tested electrical connections, plugs, rejetted, new piston and ring, almost threw away my pw 50 until I realized it was a plugged silencer from the choke being stuck on........I replaced the choke cable when I got the bike but the carbon had already built up.

now my pw 50 will pull my 200lbs around pretty well, it is a rocket with my 5 year old on it.

I agree it is rich stock but once I solved my problem I put the stock main jet back in, a 75..... It runs fine.

The kiddos don't understand the mechanics of the two stroke so (jetted rich) I don't have to worry about him pinning it forever or getting stuck and blowing it up. Plus it is easy to find him, just follow the cloud of smoke.

well with a 55lbs kid racing our pw on some laomy soil tapped out the entire circuit with a 67.5 we never siezed it. plug wasn't even totally tan. with the 65...we siezed it. 75...makes it burble big time up top. Just too much fuel. Not a big deal if your not racing and don't car if it runs crisp though. Funny how much the pilot screw affects these bikes on the topend also. Not like an other bike 50cc or above.

I agree about the cokeing in the exhaust port and pipe. When I used dino oils on the PW we'd have to clean the exhaust port quite a bit. This was a serious power hit when clogged up. Once switched to something synthetic those problems went away.

I've had a PW50 in the shed for 10 years and am going to bring it back to life this spring. I think it got parked because of carb troubles in the first place. "Sorry, we don't sell PW50 carb parts anymore" is what I get at my local shop. Before I get started, is there still a reliable oem spec parts seller for these or is used the best I'm going to find? I'd be willing to order a carburetor jetting kit for it before I even touch it, it's going to need it. Suggestions? edit: I read that the carb from a z400 ATV is a close match?
