pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about KIPS valve on a KDX.

From the manual...KIPS is an acronym for Kawasaki Integrated Powervalve System. It (they) it can't be adjusted. Depending on your premix and/or jetting, it does need to be de-carbonized from time to time though.

In addition to the site PMKDX listed, try Canadian Dave's KDX forum at www.dirtrider.net. A manual is a good start too.

I did my first topend last summer and I'm AMAZED at the engineering that has gone into the modern two strokes...especially the power valves!

Later,
Chuck

Actually, the KIPS System CAN be adjusted. Moose Racing makes a "power valve tuning kit" for the Kawasaki KDX- it consists of a set of two (2) springs:

One is lighter than stock to allow the power valve to open faster (my favorite)
One is heavier than stock to allow the power valve to open slower (gives more predictable power for tight trails, mud, etc.)

The spring is what controls the centrifugal "governor" which opens and closes the valves. I think I paid about $42.00 for a set for my '91 KDX in 1992. For the money spent, it is quite the power enhancer and is easy to install.

Also, on another note- the KIPS valve is mechanical and is prone to gumming up, especially if you run a rich premix (smoky). It's a good idea to clean it thoroughly every ten rides or so.

Ahh...I see. Those springs must be at the lower end of the actuating rod. When I rebuilt my top end I left the rod in place therefore I didn't see the springs. You learn something new everyday!

We had a 90 KDX 200 a few years back. I inadvertently used weedeater gas in it, and it made about 10 miles before bogging down and choking to a halt. We pulled the KIPS cover off, and it was coated with old carbon and new syrupy crap from the bad premix. I got out the trusty Berryman's B-12, and sprayed it religiously. The crap washed away, the valve started moving again, we filled up with good gas and rode away. I redid the whole cleaning process again, and it ran great from then on.

Probably the best investment I ever made on that KDX was buying the service manual from Kawasaki. That thing was very well detailed and told you exactly how to do everything! The manual cost me $37.00 in 1991, and it was worth every dime!

Changing the power valve spring is easy- pop the clutch cover off, push, twist and dissemble the power valve gears and couplings (not much there really), then release the spring, replace it with a different one, then stick it all back together. It takes about forty five minutes.

The "upper part" of the KIPS (the gears and valves in the cylinder)- Unless you are mechanically inclined and can figure out a 3D puzzle of "this gear goes here this way, because it has to turn the half-gear that turns that other gear, so that all of the valves open and close together in perfect unison at the right time"- then BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL, it will save your ass.
