When you went up on the countershaft sprocket, do you still have sufficient clearance between the chain and the shift shaft? At speed, the chain may be rubbing the shaft. Looks for indications on the shaft.

I'd go back to the old plug if it worked. The new one may have been dropped and is cracked.
