Yeah i guess i was being a little vague, let me try and explain. I also owned an 02 "S" model and know what can go wrong with these. Somebody who owned this bike (a 2000 E model) in the past knew quite a bit about at least a few of these issues also. The vulnerable clutch covers and the stator covers have the CFC guards on them along with a skid plate. This struck me as odd when i seen those in place but not the manual cam chain tensioner???
I was wondering if somebody knew something that i didn't about the cam chain tensioner failure? Along the lines of the 2000 models not having the issue or something like somebody was making a lot of money by telling DRZ owners that they needed the MCCT when they really didn't. But yes outside of being suspicious, as far as i understood it is an investment well worth the $50, so unless i hear otherwise i am ordering one this weekend.
I figured i would post as i thought i seen this very same bike up here for sale earlier this year. The guy i bought it off said he bought it in the spring and didn't know much about it other than the previous owner seemed to really know a lot about the bike and kept very good care of it.
For me it would be valuable to ask a few questions of that owner. The engine on my 02 "S" locked up about 3 hours after i bought it. The primary gear on that had loosened off and sent the counter balancer smashing into the crank..... or something along those lines. I could have prevented it had i pulled the clutch case off and lock tightened the nut that holds that primary gear in place. Of course i found that out the hard way but now i know that this is a potential problem with this motor so i want to make sure that i fix it now if it hasn't already been taken care of. There is also a case of where the bolts holding the stator in place have been know to come loose and grind up the stator windings. These are things that can be prevented with loctite. It's really worth my while i guess to look into these issues now anyways. It's an older bike and even if these issues were addressed the locktite will only hold for so long under engine stress.
