XR 50's and XR 70's are both clutchless 3-speeds. They are bulletproof little tractors that are very easy to learn on and very forgiving for newbies. My daughter learned on an XR70.

Concerning shifting, at first, we just left it in second. Once she got good enough to try trails, she learned that 1st is best for climbing hills. That is when she decided that shifting was a good thing. But, they will do wonders just left in 2nd (unless it is a hill with a good incline).
