Back tire, fuel tank, gear ratios, springs, and lights....that's the main differences in every other "mx vs. offroad" 4 stroke bike. Off road version will be softer suspended, about 10 mph faster, and also be lower geared for tight trails. MX version will be 10-15 pounds lighter, with stiffer suspension, both valving and springs. Cam timing may also be tweaked for the different versions.
Pick the bike for the style you'll do the most of, and accept it's shortcomings for the other use. OR, just buy a KTM, and live happily ever after.
Twyla, mx tracks aren't real friendly on headlights...however, they do look cool at night, clearing bigger jumps!

SNB, read your own post. The rear tire on the X is an 18, and the R has a 19.
Same way with the Blue, Orange, Yellow bikes.

That's all right, Keith. You're new at all this offroad stuff. Most of us old dogs have tried to ride offroad on an MX bike, and MX on an offroad bike. It really depends on what you want to do with the bike.
I rode the Lone Star state series (mx) in 97' on an XR600...took 3rd in the Open class. Rode the 98' Whitney series (mx) on a KTM 620 EXC (no lights)...1st in the Open class. Several 99' Hare Scrambles on a YZ400...stunk pretty bad, 99' Whitney series...2nd, Open Class. 2000 Whitney series on YZ 400...1st, again (4 stroke).
Heck, Steve Cardwell even rode the Houston SX amateur day on a WR 250! He said it didn't jump too well, with the big tank and all.
Also remember that the YZ and WR motors look nearly identical on paper, but were totally different on the bikes. Ignition, cam timing, exhaust can all differ from bike to bike, but won't show up on a spec sheet.

>I will simply put on a stock CRF250R tank
Why would you put on a smaller tank? Just don't fill up the bigger tank completely..either way, get the CRF250R

In reply to:

That's Carmichael - not the average rider Then again, I've seen guys rail on XR's with the headlight and all At your competition level, I wouldn't worry about shaving ounces
In reply to:

About 35 miles, and it's only 1.8 gallons
All in all..get the CRF250R over the X - you can always add a headlight to it
