I picked up a 1970 Maico 250 MX bike last weekend down by the coast. It kind of looks like it spent much of its time in the water rather than in storage there. All parts are there but the chrome is pretty much a goner...has compression, decent seat leather, controls, great compression, lots of surface rust.

I have never done a motorcycle restoration but figure since I did not spend a ton on this bike, if I blow it, not out too much $$. Seems like it would be a fun project to dabble on.

Was curious if there was anyone that has done this before and would be willing to chat about it. Not sure where to start.

Thanks, Keith

Get to know someone w/ a good sand/bead blaster. You can get the forks re-chromed,and the painted parts powder-coated.
You should attend some of the EVO races to talk w/ other Maico and vintage bike owners to get a source on parts and services. It is definately worth restoring,as long as the major parts can be re-used.

Here is a pic of the bike...maybe you can see the "silencer" on the pipe...someone rigged up a Briggs muffler eons ago.

Do it! To steal a line "restore 'em, don't crush 'em!"

Certain Maicos have some value. 250 Maicos are RARELY among them. That model is not one that falls into that rare category. If a restoration makes you feel warm and fuzzy go for it. But if you then recover 10% of your $$$ feel lucky. Very lucky.

I ended up selling the Maico to a very happy new owner who will be doing a complete resto...I only asked him for one favor and that was to email me pix when finished.

I have one more vintage bike that is now posted in the classifieds and will see if anyone is interested...it's a Bultaco and it runs.

If you're restoring dirt bikes to make money, then you're in the wrong game to begin with. Restoring dirt bikes is about PASSION, and that nice 250 SQUARE BARREL (as they are known to us aficionados) is a VERY restorable piece of MX history!!

I'm glad to hear you found it a happy home. Keep us posted on any new finds.
