Thought about upgrading the engine on my 2002 KLX110. I've noticed that all the big bore kits recommend modifying the Air Filter as well. Usually removing the Air Box and replacing with a new filter unit.

For those that have done this...is having and exposed air filiter a problem? I'm concerned about riding in inclimate weather (rain, mud) and getting moisture sucked into the engine.

I don't know but the kids that like the 50's ride with an open air filter. Today, in fact, the air filter fell out into ithe exhaust of a friend's 50. We use the K & N filter and love it..andI don't see what the benefit is to an open filter - asI could see problems. But, I am not mechancially inclined.. dee

Have only run an open filter for almost three years. I have not run into any problem due to it being open. I have, though, reqped many benefits from the motor breathing better.

Thats not a problem to take the box off and put the uni filter with the two bros bracket on the bike. Its not going to hurt the bike but instead open it up. Kawasaki did an excellent job of finding everyway possible to constrict that little beast. Just make sure you wash the filter to get the dirt out. get a uni foam filter to, not a K&N.
