I have a friend that races motocross and has recently been classified as an intermediate rider. He is interested in racing TORCS, is 17 years old, an AMA member, rides a Honda 250F. He will continue to do MX for points.

What skill level should he start off in for the TORCS series? I always advise to start low and bump yourself until your into a class of racer that is competative because it's easier to move up than down. He's afraid if he enters as an A rider, he will be bumped into pro for MX, if the AMA is involved somehow. He isn't near ready for that. I've seen him ride before, he's good, but probably a B class rider for our stuff.

I told him I didn't know if MX, TORCS and the AMA intermix, but I'm certaintly not qualified to advise here.

Is there an official that can answer his inqueries?

If your buddy is a Intermediate mxer and is winning his class He would do well in the A class. Torcs has nothing to do with the AMA from what I read so he should be fine. IF he races the B class, He will probably smoke the class unless he is a slow intermediate mxer. The cool thing is here is that there will be a good mix of riders from different diciplines. I know I can get smoked by an MXer for the first 30 mins but the race is 70 and I can usually ride longer faster that most MX riders with my same ability. That is unless he's sandbagging.

You know, your right Ken but, we know whats going to happen. The faster intermediate rider will
start off in the "C" classes until there told to move. Very few start where they should.
One thing I thought of the other day to help with this is to give 100% of their points for moving
down and 75% of their points for moving up and 50% for being told to move.
The way I see it is, if one starts in a faster class and can't hang with them and is approved to move
back a class he should get all the points he got just for trying that faster class.

I think Tyler should start off in intermediate and see what happens.

I guess a bit more simply, Tyler doesn't want to start off too low or too high. If his intermediate classification qualifies him for the A class in TORCS, then will he be automatically bumped to A class or pro for the various MX series.

He has been placing about 8th to 12th on the MX circuit as a new intermediate rider. If we have any intermediate riders out there, racing about his apparent speed, where would you recommend he start?

I've told him the B class would be a good start until he figures out this woods, creeks and unprepared trails which differ from a nice groomed MX track. If he is smoking all, he'll want to move up for the competition, as he did in his MX classification.

Hey Mike:

If your being smoked as a B, then you should go to C. I don't see anything wrong with trying to find a competative match......unless your just blowing sand up my fanny.

By the way, this kid is competative and is not interested in trying to place himself where he has an obvious advantage. He thinks that riding with faster people will improve his MX skills, but to a level, being smoked in your class doesn't help many people improve.

He was "concerned" that intermediate may equate to A in TORCS, and A in TORCS may force him to move to pro in MX. Sorry to say, he ain't no pro, and he knows that.

If this is a worthless question, just let me know and I'll delete it all.

TORCS is not a motocross eventand he should not get bumped into pro in mx from doing Expert in TORCS since it isn't only motocross. Maybe this could help, Billy races in A in STORM and TORO and he can probably make a minute a lap on me, but yet I race C in TORO and STORM and I could spank him on a motocross track it just doesn't equate the same.

Mike sounds like we should sign up in the C class.

Mike and Mike, the sandbag twins! Good thing for y'all that AA is voluntary! WooHoo!!! Actually, I'm just glad that Erwin found the dirt again. Hell, I might even start riding again, now.

Brad, stick the kid in the B class for his first ride. B is intermediate in most off road series. If he cleans up, he'll move. If not, he did right.

Brad / Kevin, can't y'all talk at the dinner table? These family conversations are eating up my bandwidth!

Lunch next week, Brad?
