I am considering buying an XR50 clone for my daughter but I am concerned about the rotary type transmission that most, if not all, of the Chinese bikes are using. I really don't want my kid to shift from 4th to N to 1st while going 25mph. That would be hard on my kid and the trans. Does anybody know if any of the copies have a Jap-type transmission or can a rotary type transmission be modified to not shift from 4th back to neutral? Thanks for any info on this topic.

just about all of the lower-quality 50 clones ive seen have the rotary-style shift. my recommendation is to stay away from those bikes all together, and find a used xr50 for a little more. the cheap bikes just arent worth attempting to swap parts to make them shift like the honda.

Your very mistaken, none... be it jap or chinese shifts 1,2,3,4 then back to neutral or 1st. rotary means its sequential 1,2,3,4 then 4,3,2,1 you cant just jup from 4 to 1 or 4 to neutral.

You are very mistaken, just go ride one of the cheap ones and you will hit nuetral more times then the gear you want,,that is unless your trying to find neutral.

As for a fix,,take the shift star off and make the valleys more defined with a dremel

i dont know what your talking about. i am talking about most of the chinese engines. I dont know what bogus brand you bought but if its something that came from a crazier country than china you may want to trash it.

I have a 70cc xr/crf clone that I bought for my boy to learn on (destroy) and it's a fun bike. It wasn't assembled well so I had to go through it, tighten bolts, and make minor adjustments. I think I have more fun riding it than he does, and it's a lot faster then I thought it'd be. I installed a FOX sticker kit, and an aftermarket rear shock but the front has vey little travel so that is my next upgrade. If you plan to do huge jumps I'd stay far away from a clone, you'd probably break the frame... but as a kids bike or a mini-tard parking lot fiddy then a clone isn't bad. I can't say anything about finding parts for one because I haven't been in that boat yet, but so far it has been money well spent.

I BOUGHT MY SON A CLONE TO LEARN ON BECAUSE I COULD GET IT FOR $400 BUCKS NEW. HE LOVES IT AND IS NOW READY TO MOVE UP TO SOMETHING BIGGER. I BOUGHT THE CHINESE BIKE BECAUSE I COULD NOT FIND A HONDA FIFTY FOR LESS THAN $800. SO FOR HALF THE MONEY I GOT A GREAT "LEARNER" BIKE. IT WOULD REALLY BE HARD TO SWALLOW TO GO BLOW A BIG WAD ON A HONDA THAT YOUR SON WILL OUTGROW IN A YEAR OR LESS AND THEN MAYBE FIND OUT HE DOESN'T LIKE TO RIDE ANYWAY. THAT WAS THE 2ND REASON I STARTED AT THE VERY CHEAP END OF THE SCALE. THE BIKE HAS BEEN FLAWLESS AND WILL TEACH MY LITTLE GIRL TO RIDE NEXT. I ALSO BOUGHT A 125 PIT BIKE FROM THE SAME COMPANY FOR ME TO RAG,AND I MEAN RAG. IT TOO HAS BEEN A REALLY FUN/RELIABLE BIKE BUT IT DOES GET A FALSE NUETRAL WHEN RIDING REALLY HARD WHERE IT IS OUT OF 3RD BUT NOT IN 2ND YET. IT IS THE ZONGSHEN BUILT MOTOR AND I HAVE READ THAT THIS IS COMMON FOR THIS MOTOR BUT HEY, FOR $650 I CAN'T COMPLAIN TOO MUCH.

Yeah most of the china stuff is crap. We custom build nothing but pit bikes, honda, yamaha, chinese... pretty much anything. Alot of our stuff goes to pro riders to and some of them even ride the china stuff like aaron smith, jost demuth, heck patrick stephens has a china bike and hes the world champion of bikes anything. Anyway. We really only do custom stuff but we do buy the crf50 honda to customize and have stock on those but also have the china stuff. We work on this one brand that has the zongshen engine and its really freaken reliable. Parts are pretty much impossible to find in most cases, but we are in dfw area and since we custom build all day long, we pretty much have any part in stock that will fit honda or chinese. So if you ever need the mini parts, come on by.... or you could always stop by and check out the honda vs the chinese one and ride them and see what you think. We are pretty laid back and easy going. Peace.

The Zongshen motor is pretty reliable. However, this past weekend I blew up 3rd gear and am hopefully getting this guy up here above me to warranty it. They have treated me good so far. So as long as they don't end up screwing me on the warranty then I would definately reccomend these guys.
