Hi everyone, i'm planning on going to my first TORCS event next weekend and wanted to ask a few questions.

Do people normally wear hydration packs while they race or get water when they stop for fuel?

People on 450s with normal sized tanks, how often do you have to stop and refuel? Im on a KX450 and am trying to gauge how many times I would need to stop.

Is there a specified pit area where you have to stage your extra fuel, or do people just set up their own areas near the timing gate?

Thanks in advance for your input. If you have any other advice for a first time racer please feel free to chime in.

Welcome to TORCS!

People probably wear hydration packs more in the summer. I used to wear one all the time but now just wear one if it is really hot. I am pretty good about making sure I am hydrated before the race. If you think you need it though go for it.

Regarding refueling, I will let people who actually race 450's chime in, but I believe most people are able to make the 70 min race (i.e. probably ends up being an average of 80 mins.) without having to refuel. I can't think of a single person I know that has to refuel. The Pro's used to refuel when they raced a lot longer but that has been a couple of years now.

Show up and have fun! The tracks that Gil (i.e. Jackie and Gil run TORCS) puts together are normally awesome.
Talk to Jackie at registration and she will get you all setup.

Tbone, I don't ever carry water in a TORCS race but definitely not in winter, I've never pitted in a TORCS race. Could be wrong but pretty sure even the pros make it without refueling. One guy in my class starts with 1/2 a tank so he doesn't have to carry the extra weight, lol. He knows how much he needs. You should be fine. There used to be a pit area, not even sure there is a marked off spot anymore. If you're really worried about it ask in scoring, because I think it's against the rules to fuel up "just anywhere".

From rulebook:
E. Refueling anywhere other than in designated pit area. Disqualification.

The reason for 70 minutes is so a stock tank can make the full race. The only time there might be an issue is in a mud or sand race where there's a lot of wheel spin.

There have been times when people pull off the track for mechanical reasons, but as long as you re-enter at the same spot you're fine. If you feel you need to pit, they will let you know where to do it. Typically shortly after the scoring shoot. A few years ago my vintage bike couldn't make a whole race and that's what they told me to do. I was the only one pitting by the way.

I always have a drink system on in case I need it. Also pre-registering online will save you a ton of time during signup.

A good way to judge how much fuel you use is too fill your tank before practice. Do a lap or two and see how much is left. We usually do 4-5 laps. I think we did 6 last year at Revs because it was so open.

I raced a KXF450 my first year and now a KTM350 and I don't think I've ever burned more than about 5/8 of a tank when full under normal conditions. There is no reason if your tank is full you should ever need to stop for fuel unless you have a hole in your tank. I always wear a camelback with my favorite Powerade flavor but I know some who don't and to be honest I don't know how they do it. Lots of times it's not about having it for hydration it's to rinse the dirt out of your mouth. Good Luck your first time out and the next race is a awesome place.
