I think www.kbb.com or www.edmunds.com have prices for used bikes. My experience is that these bikes hit a floor and hold their value around $800 to $1000 unless there is something obviously wrong with them.

I've owned several XR's, including a handful of 500 and 600's. Any decent 600 should be worth a grand or so. It will still be worth that in 5 years, too.

Check the valves, to keep it running right and starting good. Run the carb 1-2 jets richer than stock, and change the oil at a regular (8-10 hour) interval, and you'll be fine.

Those big XR's are virtually indestructible!!! Likewise I have owned several of the 500’s and 600’s. Tom is spot on!!, keep clean oil in them and the valves adjusted and they will run forever (as long as you don’t let them set up a few months and varnish the carb(s) ). In ’83 they put 2 carbs (or a 2 stage carb ) that was kinda tricky to adjust if they ever got out of sync but I am not sure how many years they had that configuration.

About the only negative thing I can say about them, they were very heavy but the power is a rush!

Good luck to your friend!
