Paul "Rodzilla" Rodden is lining up a trip to Presidio, TX for a trail ride in Mexico. Has anyone done this? Is it safe? Is it worth it? Has Rodzilla thrown a rod? I'd appreciate any info. It's scheduled for 2nd week in Feb.

I heard that "Far Flung Adventures" out of Telingua had started giving Jeep tours due to draught and low river conditions this past year. They may be a good source to ask your safety concerns. If they say it's not dangerous..it's probably safe..if they say watch out for bandits, or that there are problems....be waaaay careful.
Have fun and go prepared.
...My brother in law spent nearly a year in a Mexico jail last year cuz he crossed the border for tacos and forgot he had ammo in the car from the hunting trip to NM. Fear the bandits...but fear the authorities more.

I've been on 4 motorcycling expeditions to the Copper Canyon area in Chihuahua. I think in general, if you are away from the border area, and away from the scuzzy side of town, you have little to worry about. That is, unless you wander into someone's marijuana patch. It helps to have someone along who speaks spanish.

I've been many times to Sugar Lake, Mexico. It is a great rockcrawling locale near Mcallen. I loved it every time, and the biggest hassle for me is coming back across the border. US Customs loves to inspect my heep.

You are right about being very careful. Have walked across many suzzy border towns and they will lie to you and wait to see if you get in trouble. Interior Mexico can be good based on where you are going and the history. Have known hunters and pilots that chartered/piloted King & Queen Air's to go down in Mexico and die. This is by reputable aviation charters out of Houston, TX. Get the facts and have a reputable, bondable, knowledgable (and contactable) sources IN Mexico and USA before you venture south.
