I am new to riding and I'm looking for a pair of boots. The riding I do is mostly trails, no MX. I have all the gear except boots. Most of the boots I have checked out feel more like ski boots than something I would want to ride in. Are all boots like this? My main question is, for trail riding, what is a good (and cheap) boot that's not too stiff?

Thanks in advance...................

Boots are made stiff for a reason. You need the extra ankle and arch support when riding. All your weight rests on the balls of your feet, mostly, and sometimes on your toes. That's why the boots don't flex too much.

Get a base level pair of Fox or Thor or Oneal, etc. You'll pay $125-175, but you'll get used to the stiffness real soon. Also, as they break in, they loosen up a little. Don't scrimp on your gear...it's what reduces your injuries when you fall. And you're gonna fall.

Good luck on the trails.....

All new boots are going to be stiff. It don't take that much walking to braking them in.
Don't get the cheapest thing you can find. Spend around $125 - $200 for something
worth buying. Here are some places to check out.

www.rockmountainmc.com
www.bobscycle.com
www.btosports.com
www.motosports.com

Look at the closeout listings. Call to ask about closeouts.

Remember; The boots you get are there to protect your feet.

If I were you I would check out http://www.gaerne.com. They have different kind of boots for different kind of riding and they break in really fast. And I think boots are more for ankle support not the feet. If it were just for feet we could go to Wal-Mart and pick up some red wings.

totally agree with the previous posts!!!

another point to consider is size!!!! the different brands vary greatly in sizes and widths.... if you are going to order some, I suggest going in to a shop and trying different styles and brands on to find the ones that feel the best around the foot area and ankle....

spoken from some one that has problems even finding regular shoes/boots...

I have a pair of gaerne size 11e fits like a glove, old high points (do they even make those anymore?) had to get a size 12, oneil & fox - size 13...

not to mention how the top fits around the calf.... just a few more points to consider depending on your foot/calf size...

good luck but boots are a MUST !!!

Alpinestar Tech 8, hands down the best, wether your ridinging in the back yard or racing at CycleRanch. They get the job done and them some. Just my 2 cents.

I've always ran the Alpinestars tech 8s also But a few of my friends have switched from the tech 8s to gaerne and they said they feel better and they don’t wear out near as fast. I'm now riding for gaerne so ill be able to tell you what I think soon but with the Alpinestars I go through soles every 6 months. Maybe I’m just hard on them who knows.
