I'm buying a new vehicle and looking for "some" offroad capability. I mainly drive in the city, but, I do want to be able to do some more of the trails in Big Bend when I am out there.

I was thinking of a Subaru Outback, perhaps with a two inch lift kit. I know that would exclude some trails, of course, but how far would that get me for enjoying some more back country in Big Bend?

I was looking at the 4Runner, but, I kind of decided I don't want to drive a gas guzzler that, for my needs (single guy) is pretty big just so once in a blue moon I can go offroad. But, I still could be convinced :-).

Looking to stay under $45k for a new vehicle. Any advice?

Outback won't be that thrilling for off-roading. I suggest you buy bigger trucks (4x4) to really feel that off-road feeling especially when the trail is kinda steep.
