Watson Ranch, Leander, TX.

Bring your camera's if you are into nature because the ranch has billions and billions of wild flowers with all the rain we have had. Take a moment to stop and look. Sometimes when you are only focused on riding the track and do not stop to take a look around you miss out on being out in nature on a beautiful ranch like this one. I think everyone will be amazed at how beautiful this place really is. There are places at the tops of the hills that you can see more than 15 miles to Cedar Park, TX. I am so grateful that Stuart Watson has allowed myself and my son Kyle to go to this place over the years and now we are having a ride day here!!! Thanks to Stuart and Steve Watson.

Please be on your best behavior. The smoother things go this ride day, the better the odds are for us to have more ride days in the future!

George McMahan (Smithville Property) has mentioned several times to me at the end of a ride day after everyone is gone that "you would never know anyone was ever here." Let's do a repeat here!

Treat landowners and their land with respect and our club will have more opportunities to enjoy riding at these most precious places.

Be cautious and do not spook the cattle or horses on the ranch. The cattle and horses are not use to dirt bikes.

TIME

We will begin riding at EIGHT (8) A.M.
We will stop riding at 4 P.M.

COST

$20 for current AMSA members.
LINK TO AMSA MEMBERSHIP FORM
I always have membership forms at any AMSA event and you may join at any event we host. It will save you time to have your membership form completed before you arrive.

$30 for guests.
Your guest fee includes a day membership to AMSA.

Pee Wee riders & beginner riders not riding the trail system will ride at a reduced rate, our discretion.

Non-riders do not pay any fee's.

TRAILS - TERRAIN

We have a 9 to 11 mile main loop. The length depends on if you take the hard splits or the easy split. The hard splits will have some challenging hill climbs for "B" level riders.

We have a kids or beginners loop right next to the parking area.

We have a shorter, guessing 3 to 4 mile loop near parking that you can ride all day long without venturing out into the other area's of the ranch. This will still be challenging for beginner's but nothing difficult like hill climbs or major obstacles.

The terrain in the more hilly area's have some rocks but not anything like Hidden Falls or CTOR. The lower lying area's have clay, sandy loam, and some small rocks that are quarter sized.

Jumps! There are about a dozen jumps that you can hit hard and jump or roll. These are easy jumps and fun, fun, fun. You will know what I mean after you make a few laps.

DIRECTIONS

The address is 15507 Chaparral Drive, Leander, TX 78641.

From Austin. Take HWY 183 or 183 A north to Leander, TX.

You want to take the "Old Georgetown Road" Left or 2243 Left (West).

Drive about 6 miles and turn right onto Round Mountain Road.

Drive about 1/4 mile and turn LEFT onto Fulkes Road.

Drive about 1 and 1/3 miles until you arrive at a three way stop.

Turn right onto Fawn Drive.

At the next right, turn onto Chaparral Drive.

Go to the end of Chaparral Drive and you will end up at the gate to the ranch. This is a very twisty road so be careful, but, it will be worth it!

You must sign-in BEFORE you ride.

Hope to see everyone out to have some fun riding and to enjoy the Watson Ranch.

Thanks,
-The Watson Family & AMSA

Trails are mostly dry now. But there are still some stubborn wet spots. New AMSA signs for the ride day are in place:

Krista and I will be there and we're bringing out a few new AMSA guests. It sounds like an awesome ranch for a ride day!

O.K., the ride day is on. A sprinkle today and it was cloudy all day with a huge breeze flowing all day at this high elevation of ranch.

We put up a few hundred arrows today. Course is looking good and we took out any sections that had mud or water.

We have a small 1/4 mile kids loop right next to the parking area. Nice and easy for the little one's. Easy for Mom or Dad to see them the whole time.

We have a Short Loop and Long Loop.

The Short Loop is about 4 to 5 miles and has one hard easy split. This loop is on acreage around the parking area. This is what I recommend for beginners and your average trail rider. There are about 10 jumps but you can jump them or easily roll them. No worries on the other side on the jump. No surprises.

On the Short Loop, soon after you cross the road coming into the ranch near sign-in you will come to a split for going back to the Short Loop or you can head out to the Long Loop.

The Long Loop will be more challenging than the Short Loop. The Long Loop will have what we consider easy hill climbs and hard splits for what we consider Hard Hill Climbs. There will be open and fast sections and tight single tract for short distances.

I recommend the easy splits on the long loop for C riders or intermediate level trail riders and the hard splits for the B or A level riders or above.

This ranch has so much to offer and we wanted to offer a wide variety of riding and that is what you will find at this ride day.

I hope to see everyone out tomorrow for what should be a very different venue and another epic AMSA ride day.

I want to thank Keith Jackson and friends for spending so much time at the ranch cutting new trail. Long process.

Last I want to thank the Watson family for allowing us to enjoy their most beautiful ranch!

Thanks for the update, Larry. I got to use the tractor today, and I mowed the road to the parking area, and most of the parking area itself. Also shredded some small cedar bushes and agarita bushes that could harbor snakes, etc.

There is a new concern about the cows. Today I found a mama cow on the trail, with a newborn calf one or two days old. I slowly shooed them out of the riding area, and the mama was not happy, shaking her (long sharp) horns at me. The calf could not walk very far at a time. When we move all the cows we can find to the other side of the ranch in the morning before the ride, this mama cow and baby, and others, might remain in the riding area. Mama and baby longhorns want to stay away from the herd, until the baby is one or two weeks old.

So riders need to use extra caution on the trail. If you encounter a cow, especially a mama cow and baby calf, you need to slow way down, stop, get off the trail, whatever it takes to NOT spook the cow.

Other than that, it should be an awesome ride!!!

All are welcome. I am glad to be able to share my family's good fortune (the ranch) with people who love to ride. Gil, does that Gopro we found for you have some good video of the ranch on it now? Maybe you can give us a link to it. Or anyone else who took video you would like to share.

I had a "jumpcam" video camera out there, mounted on a survey stake. I don't know how much video it took, hopefully enough to see that dog styling over a jump. That is a very smart dog, gets his human to do the driving, while the dog enjoys the roller-coaster ride and the breeze!

What a great time we had yesterday at the Watson Ranch! The long loop was the perfect mix of fast, open, tight, up, down and challenging. Thanks to Stuart and his family for allowing us to ride their big 'ol slice of off-road paradise and to everyone with AMSA who worked so hard to make this ride day happen. I can't wait to get the chance to go back and enjoy such a fun place close to home.

I want to say a HUGE thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy Watson Ranch yesterday and Stuart, Steve and Marsha Watson for allowing and trusting us to host a ride day at their ranch.

Yesterday we set a new record for AMSA ride day attendance. We also set a new record for the first time ever dog who rode the trails all day on a dirt bike!

Thanks for supporting AMSA.

We also had discussion with the land owners last night after the dust cleared and we will be having another ride day at Watson Ranch in future months.

Stay tuned and we will let you know about the next ride day and where that will be.

Thanks,
-Larry

I had to miss as just had got back in the country and it was my wife's birthday to boot. I decided after all these years she just might divorce me if I would have chose Watson ranch over her. But I gotta admit I was considering it.........:>)

I've been out on a Emma Long Wed ride day when this guy & his dog showed up. They had no problem navigating Emma at a very healthy pace. This combo is not a hinderance to either rider or passenger.

Good stuff.

AWESOME about sums it all up. You guys really out did yourselves this time. What a great place to ride and what a wonderful trail layout you guys put together. Had a little bit of everything including a whole lot of fun. Many thanks to the Watson family for letting us ride out there. Any time you're willing to have us come back, I'll do my best to be there. This place is so close to my house that if you guys need any help clearing, cutting or marking trail. Post up here and I'll be glad to throw in a hand or two. Matter of fact I have a boy that can use some more work in his life and he likes doing outdoor work.

It sure is fun to watch those videos, there are several now of this ride day on youtube that are pretty cool. I think I need to mount some handle bars to my desk here at work, with bark busters too, of course. Thanks for posting!
