The McMahan's will host a ride day on Saturday August 22nd. We are still working on Powell Ranch and will have that ride day soon!

I know there is a TORCS race this weekend. We had no flexibility on this date. Sorry for those who will miss out but we will have other events to make up for this one.

More details to come in a week or so.

Yep... an invitational event. As an AMSA member you are invited. This party is for our founding member...Will Hendrix.

If you have not been to the McMahon ranch, this is the time to come on out. One of my favs for sure.

SO.....

Come on out and cellabrate Will's 80th B-Day..!!!

We will have a work day Sunday August 2nd at Smithville.

We plan to start at 8 A.M. while it is still freezing outside!

This is not a ride day. It is a work day to try and get the trails in shape for a ride day(s).

Post any questions you might have.

As I told Greg on the previous weekend when there were 9 of us that helped at Powell Ranch, post up on a Monday or so. I can help this Saturday morning but I am riding this coming Sunday.

Fair enough Gil. Most times I do not know what my schedule is until around mid week.

We will be setting up trail at McMahan Ranch this coming Saturday & Sunday August 8th & 9th.
Post up if you can make it.

Meet by the BIG Barn. Bring lots of fluids, saws, chain saws, loppers, gloves, protective gear.

The trail will be going in a clock wise direction this time. at the first gate, follow that fence line. You will see pink ribbon on the fence heading East, then North, etc. Ribbon on your right, you are going the right way. Follow the ribbon and you will eventually find the work crew. I hung ribbon until I could not stand it no more. Please move stuff off the trail as I only hung ribbon. When you come to the creek (right) or go straight (easy), take you pick and continue to follow the ribbon until you meet up with the work crew. Thanks, -Larry

There'll be three of us coming out Saturday to assist. Any problem if I bring out a utility 4-wheeler for trail maintenance?

The main ranch at the BIG barn off Old Lake Road. We will meet at the big barn and be working the two ride areas. They are now connected by two gates in the middle of the Ranch. The ranch is much larger than it originally was. Our plan is to connect the two existing trail systems together for this up coming ride for Will Hendrix.

So meet at the McMahan I ranch as you refer to it. We have had several ride days here over the past four years.

The other ride area will be connected, hopefully, to the original ride area for this ride. George McMahan refers to this section of land as the old Synnott Place. It is sometimes referred to as the 88 acres. We had our first ride at the old Synnott place last January I believe?

Hope that makes sense?

Thanks,
-Larry

And I just want to remind everyone, it is coming up this Saturday! A lot of people have worked hard to redo all the trails and tie the two ranches together. There some all new trail, and some old sections tied together differently so it will have a whole NEW feel to it. All AMSA members are invited and any and all of Will's old riding buddies. That will include A LOT of people so be sure and tell anyone you know that is buddies with Will. And this can be a membership recruiting event for AMSA; if you are wanting to join, come out this Saturday and pay your club fee to become a member, I've heard it's just $ 15.00. The ride day or the BBQ plate would cost you more than that so come on out. I k now it will be hot but we've been riding, cutting trail, and marking and as long as yoiu're moving, not really that bad! And please send me an e-mail if you are coming, by this Wednesday night so I can be sure to have enough food. gmac11@suddenlink.net Thanks, George

George, I'm pretty sure that is not the price. I believe it is $35 for an individual and $50 for a family membership which is what I bought.

How does the membership work? $50 for the family membership, then is there a cost for the actual ride days?

Right now we have a 7 to 8 mile loop near the parking area and an additional 3 to 4 mile loop that can be included in the main loop or bypassed. Total mileage is around 11 to 12 miles.

Will there be a kids loop? I have one that has a small 4-wheeler so can she ride that in the field and open area around the parking lot? It has been too long since I've been an AMSA member and need to get back in the loop.

No kids loop (single track) but lots of area to ride on roads, the field, etc. We are lucky in that this is a dream of George's to have a place that people came come and ride off-road. AMSA is a family oriented club and we do not have enough kids as it is to carry the club forward. We love kids to come out and enjoy this sport. If you ever have any questions or concerns, you come ask us and we will take care of you. Thanks Darren, -Larry

P.S. what size shirts do your kids wear? I have a few kids AMSA T-Shirts laying around. They will be3 the coolest kids at school! wink

Gil, LJ, thanks for the correction, I didn't know, just going off what I'd heard. This ride would cost a member 20 bucks and the meal is worth 15 bucks, so anyone that comes and joins this Saturday, rides and eats is basically joining for FREE! And I heard from Will Will today, he is really excited about this!!!!!

Best yet.. open fast stuff... tight new stuff, and just wee bit of sand.

linking the other properties together really adds to the "I'm lost" factor (luv to get lost). It seems more like a trek, than just a loop.

SOOOO.....Bring extra fuel....!

Kant wait.

thanks, George and Wayne smile

This message from George McMahan:

The ride will begin at sun up which I think is between 7:00 and 7:30 AM?

DIRECTIONS

LAT: 29.984019 LONG: -97.134377

From Austin. Take HWY 71 East to Smithville. There are three (3) exits in Smithville. You want to that the third (3rd) exit and stay on the feeder road to 230 (also named Old Lake that curves south). Turn right on 230 (Old Lake) for one quarter (1/4) mile. Turn left onto Old Lake Road and drive three quarters (3/4) of a mile to #290 Old Lake Road where you will see a large, light brown, pipe gate on your right. It has a iron sign that says "McMahan Ranch". From the entrance you will drive to the second (2nd) gate where you will see the LARGE metal barn. Sign in will be under the car port on the left side of the barn. You must sign-in BEFORE you ride.

Hope to see everyone out to have some fun riding and to celebrate Will Hendricks birthday, AMSA's first President and club founder.

Thanks,
-The McMahan Family & AMSA

George would like to remind everyone that there is no charge for riding and celebrating an epic birthday for a founding AMSA luminary. You can look for Larry or me if you decide to join the AMSA club. It's not required, though.

The trail is going to be a lot of fun and the temps are predicted to be lower than they have been lately. It should be a great weekend of riding and socializing.

The kids on 50s have options.

The newest riders can ride jeep roads with your supervision. They are not marked but you can always turn back to get to camp. There are also lots of open pastures near parking to ride in. Jeep road riders should turn around when they reach trail markings. Trail crossings are not safe for inexperienced riders who are not aware of all the risks.

Safety note: DO NOT continue if the pink ribbons that are marking the trail are on your left - that is going the wrong way. The trail is one-way and nobody will be expecting oncoming traffic.

The intermediate riders can try the short section at the end of the trail loop that goes behind the barn, right by the parking area. It is is not difficult and would give a good taste of the trail conditions.

Accomplished riders can ride the whole loop. It would pose some challenge for a 50 but it has been done.

Greg

Looking at radar, it appears that the ranch may get some much needed wet stuff which should make the conditions perfect for the ride day. I think it's awesome how it seems to bring the rain when the club plans a ride day. I am going to try like heck to be there early if I can get away for a few hours Saturday morning.

Just remember that this trail and this ride were planned as a fun trail ride. It's not a substitute race event. If you come up on a slower rider, especially a young or inexperienced rider, you should exercise your patience and wait for a safe place to get by.

Please make sure to go to the main barn and sign the release form before you start to ride.

I just spoke with the land owner and the answer is Yes. Camping is expected. They weren't planning for trail riding today, though. Gates are not open and fully marked yet, cattle may still be getting moved. Things like that.

It looked like that area was going to get more rain than we did further NW in Austin. I assume this won't be a problem due to absorption and run-off, and that we're still a go?

The area got some rain, but it needed it. The radar seemed to show that the rain was heavier to the east of the ranch. The TORCS race was probably less than 100 miles to the east. You know how different the weather can be closer to Houston, though. I have not heard from anyone there about the conditions today. I expect it to be OK there. I will post if I hear otherwise.

Ball sports only require 1 ball, I prefer the 2 ball sports!!

Thanks, I suppose I will re-load the trailer now and plan to head up tonight!!

See everyone tomorrow for some seat time that doesn't have VW sized rocks in the path.

The Mcmahons are good people especially if you are Red Raider fans. just dont show up with any UT or aggie crap on!

Sweet, sounds like an awesome turnout, can't wait! Moist soil at this time of year is a blessing. Don't miss this trail ride!

This message from George McMahan:

And I just want to remind everyone, it is coming up this Saturday August 22nd! And this can be a membership recruiting event for AMSA; if you are wanting to join, come out this Saturday and pay your club fee to become a member, Memberships are $35 for a single and $50 for a family.

I do not think we will be riding Sunday. I will ask George McMahan and let you know.

You can camp Saturday night and leave "rested" Sunday!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Great dirt, great course, great people, and the weather gods even gave us some cloud cover to help keep the temps down all morning. Can't say enough about the property owners and trail crew.

Ridiculously fantastic set up. Shade under the trees, strong breeze and a fast trail with nice sand challenges. My tires didn't show any wear (unlike emma long or hidden falls) . The heat did get to me by 1 pm (4 laps until I hurt my thumb) so I had to head home.
I can't thank everyone envolved in setting this up. I hope they know from someone , that it was one of the best rides , if not the best, for many of us this year.
Happy birthday.

My buddies and I had a blast yesterday. Thanks to all who helped lay out and mark the trail. You guys did great. That was a great place to ride.

Thanks to Bob G for the shade of his pop-up. We were so worn out when we left that I didn't think to thank him.

The BBQ was great! Only problem was we had some left, it was even better on Sunday. Thanks to everyone that helped lay out the trails and to those that came out. It was fun and a fitting tribute for Will. At 80, he's still ridng and going fast; gives us younger (but old) guys some hope!

PS: I'm hoping that Larry and AMSA will use that same basic course and do another ride day in mid to late September, maybe it will rain and be cooler.

George, Thanks for opening up your great property for us to ride. It was truly a great time. We missed out on the BBQ because I had to get home for some "honey do's"

Maybe next time I can stay longer and we can talk some Texas Tech Football!

See you at the next ride day for sure!

Charlie, it was really nice to meet you, albeit briefly! It was my pleasure and a dream come true for me to be able to host MC events on my land. And to get to do this for Will and with all the big name LEGENDS that showed up, wow, that was humbling.
