We plan to go to Powell Ranch next.

Then Walnut Creek.

Then a new place in Leander, TX, the 700 acre Watson Ranch!

The old Synnott Place. Now McMahan's place.

Then McMahan Ranch sometime after mid-May.

And we might even have a surprise or two thrown in along the way!?!? smile

I will post details as we progress.

Thanks,
-Larry

Update. I am having trouble obtaining a new carrier for our insurance. For some reason the previous carrier chose not to renew our policy. I will update you as I know more information.

Thanks, -Larry.

I found some insurance. We are waiting on the binder to arrive.

I know this week will have great weather and better this weekend but we do not have a place set up due to all the rain we have had.

Looks like we may be having a break coming our way! The long range forecast has little if any rain in it! I almost forget where I left my "dirt" bike????? smile

Awesome! I know we need the rain, but I need to ride also! Can't wait to hear when/where I'll be able to get on the bike again. Seems like it's been forever..

Been too long for me, I am going to Hidden Falls after work tonight to get a little ride in. I know rocks don't absorb moisture! AND I have not bought a new rear tire yet, so I can shred whats left of mine. By the way I called today and they said it is $15 after 5 if anyone cares.

I mostly rode the ATV trails, as the single track is simply too tough for an old man. ( Green loop, Turkey trot, Red Oak, Vista, west loop) Everywhere there was a low area there was water. But the damn ground is so hard out there no worries about bogging down, just plow thru it. All I can say about HF is you got to want to ride really really bad to go there on a dirt bike. It is really more "rock climbing" - dirt is hard to come by. Still I had not been for over a month so I am glad I went. Did I mention it is very very very ROCKY?

I will be updating the plans soon. We will be riding in Leander soon as well. Maybe sooner than later since we have lots of tree removal and need to let the creeks dry a bit at properties in Bastrop County.

Just an FYI. I know this is the first weekend it has not rained in a loooong time. However, it is my daughters graduation from high school this weekend and that is much more important than dirt bikes. Hope everyone understands. Looks like things open up after this weekend. I will update asap! Thanks, -Larry

A few of us went riding at Rusty's Saturday and he mentioned that AMSA was wanting to do a family ride there but he did not mention any dates. There was some standing water in some locations, but we were still able to get a loop together.

Darius,
I just spoke with Rusty and he said the more the merrier on Saturday morning but he asked that we finish riding at 2PM because some horses will be out there sometime in the afternoon. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would have been.

Trails were not overgrown that bad, but quite a bit of of timber across them in sections. As per Gilbert and friends there they reversed the loop direction and it made for much better riding. Good part is Rusty mowed the Pecan bottom where we park. Good times!

I hope not Darrius (or at least hope for an alternative weekend). . I signed up to support AMSA this year but if that's true both rides days have been scheduled the same weekend as a torcs race.

This has been a tough spring and early summer for riding and setting up rides. TORCS has had tough weather for almost all of their races this year. AMSA has some things in the works, but it takes a lot to set these rides up....especially with all of the growth, flood damage and now the heat. Rusty's isn't bad...went out there last Sunday morning. He has had a lot of flood damage and there are ways around but it could use some work as well. Always remember to call Rusty to make sure he doesn't have a horse trail ride scheduled. Murphys MX is just down the road from Rusty's and they have trails as well. CTOR is also another option.

Hey Maddog, am curious about CTOR how do we go about getting a ride out there. Years ago I went but I had to call some guy and he had to meet me and OK me riding as am not a member. Has things changed out there?

As most people know we had a significant amount of rain this past spring. All the rain caused overgrowth at the ranches, flooded the creeks, and caused many trees to fall. There is so much overgrowth at Powell Ranch that we cannot see the single track trail while walking. Essentially, we are having to cut a new trail in the single track areas.

Our plan is to do Powell Ranch first, then Walnut Creek, then Smithville on August 22 per the landowners request. The Smithville ride is August 22nd per the land owner’s request, so there is nothing we can do about that date and conflicting events.

There are people working on Watson Ranch also.

The more people we can get to help, the sooner we can get trail loops ready to ride. Three people worked most of the day last Sunday at Powell’s Ranch and completed ribboning around ˝ mile of trail. It still needs to be trimmed to be ready for a ride day. At that rate, it will take 12 work days to ribbon a six mile continuous loop. If there were enough people there so that the people hanging ribbon did not have to cut limbs and drag them off the new trail, it would be ready faster.

We prefer that a couple of us that really know the properties hang ribbon and helpers follow behind and cut face slappers and move dead fall. Thanks, -Larry & Greg

Sunday, 7/19, is looking good for a work day.

I will be at Powell's Ranch around 9:00 AM. If anybody wants to help, come when you can - leave when you want to! There is not much riding possible at the moment. I went to the back of the property last week and I could only find the widest of the trails. As soon as they became singletrack, they were indistinguishable from the rest of the woods. With the tall grass and numerous hidden logs and limbs on the ground, I couldn't ride trail for any distance.

There is still plenty of work finding the old trail, finding bypass trails, hanging ribbon, cutting branches, and dragging logs. We will start where the trail crosses the road, just before where we normally sign people in for the ride days. You should be able to find and follow the Ribbon-on-the-Right from the road crossing.

We parked by the oil tanks last week because the weeds are too high in the usual parking area.

Watch for snakes, or stay by me. I hardly ever see one. They must not like the way I smell!

Greg

Me and my friends showed up.

Grumpy Greg was there when I tried to roll backwards down a hill on my bike to back out of the branches of a fallen tree blocking the trail, and a dead limb stopped me just when the foot pegs were over the dip in the trail. Kind of a long fall from there.

Mad Greg was there when I was marking a new piece of trail and kept running into the trail I marked a half-mile ago in an area with a lot of trail winding close to itself.

Scaredy Greg was there when I had to climb over logs in the high grass and the sound of rustling grass and scraping logs sounded so much like a rattlesnake.

Delirious Greg was there when I got hungry and drank all my water, a long walk away from my bike.

Lucky Greg was there when I desperately left the trail and walked straight through the woods to get my bike, and I went right to it.

And, finally, Happy Greg was there when I got to my car and sat in front of the A/C blowing on high, and ate the best PB&J I ever tasted.

All of that was before lunch! We had a great time.

Greg

P.S. Never saw or heard one snake in 5 1/2 hours. Strange but true.

I don't know yet if Larry will be in town or not.

I will be at Powell Ranch again on Sunday. I usually get there at 9:00. If anyone wants to come, just come when you can and leave when you need to.

We can't always commit to a specific work day early in the week. Larry and I are busy guys. Sometimes it's impossible to predict what's going to come up. That makes it hard for people to make it out to help, but that's reality for you. Life happens.

Equipment and supplies: Loppers, small saws, and pruning tools are about all we need. The fallen trees give us a reason to reroute trail, which is not a bad thing. If it's too big for hand tools, we can go around it. If something HAS to be moved, we can come back with a chainsaw another day. An old set of gear is nice to wear for abrasion and thorn protection. Boots, gloves, water, food. It's hot, it's harder work than it looks like, and we'll be walking a lot. Prepare like an athlete.

I have enough ribbon for the work day.

See ya!

We will start at the pecan bottom and continue hanging pink ribbon and making the trail negotiable from where I left off last weekend. If anyone arrives after we have left the parking area, here's how to find us:

* From the oil tanks, follow the jeep road toward the back of the property.
* Take the first jeep road that leads to the left and follow it to the pecan bottom.
* Turn right in the pecan bottom and stay next to the hillside that will be on your right. You'll have to go around a big fallen tree, but do your best.
* You will see a white ribbon or two hanging where we went up the hillside to start working on the trail. Bikes might still be parked there.
* There are logs and tree limbs hidden in the tall grass. Be careful riding in the tall grass.

If you get lost,
dial 512
then 694
then 6497

Big thanks to everyone who came to help yesterday! We had around nine people who showed up. With their help, we marked the trail and rerouted around fallen trees, finishing the marking and trimming of the first half of the loop. Probably three miles in one day. Some parts went quickly, but some parts were completely blocked and needed rerouting. Big thinks to David and Dale for scouting reroutes since it's not always the first idea that works out and walking around blindly in tall grass and thick brush is part of it.

On the "you learn something new every day" subject, I learned that some kinds of ants taste like lemon drops! Not on the ranch, though. No, nobody tried it! See Lemon Ants on this page... https://edibug.wordpress.com/list-of-edible-insects/
