Tulsa World News Article on the Coke Syrup Race
Cartwright overtakes Tulsan in Open Expert event
By John Rittenoure
February 7, 1999
"Racing motorcycles on a polished concrete floor covered with soft drink syrup is no easy task, but riders in 16 classes competed in the seventh race of the indoor Arena Clash motorcycle series Saturday night at Tulsa Expo Square Pavilion.
In the 600cc Open Expert division, 18-year-old Brandon Cartwright of Sapulpa beat National AMA professional rider Joe Duvall of Tulsa into the first turn and held on to capture the victory.
"I got the hole shot and my bike was hooked up," said Cartwright of his race to the checkered. "My dad Danny Cartwright dialed it in real good today and everything was working great."
It takes a little different strategy to go fast on a flat concrete floor but Cartwright showed a lot of experience.
"It takes a lot of traction. You have to have your bike set up right," said Cartwright who has more experience on dirt. "You don't slide very much; it is just a lot of traction. I liked it. I have more fun on this kind of stuff."
Cartwright has run in the first six events and has done well.
"I've won five of this series and have been in the top three of all of these races," said Cartwright. "I have been doing my best at Muskogee and Purcell."
Cartwright is an old hand at racing thanks to the influence of his dad.
"I have been doing this since I was four," recalled Cartwright. "My dad used to be a National number and he got me into this stuff."
Cartwright wants to follow in his dad's footsteps.
"I am going to Florida in two weeks to run the Nationals," said Cartwright. "I just got my National plate this year. The National is at Daytona at Municipal Stadium."
Cartwright is using the indoor season to get ready for another season on the AMA circuit.
"We have been riding a lot of indoors and getting ready for Day tona Beach," said Duvall. "We have some new bikes and a new National number. We finished 30th in the Nation in the 883 series.
"I broke my ankle early in the year and it was an up-and-down season. But we finished out on a good note and we're ready to get it on."
