Emma Long Motorcycle Trail Repair Update
January 29, 2013

The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department awarded American Youthworks (AY) the trail repair contract in the amount of $49,500 to repair 28 specific locations which have demonstrated extensive degradation and erosion along the trail. The department representatives along with members of AY, Central Texas Trials Association (CTTA), Austin Ridge Riders (ARR), [Austin MotorSport Assoc (AMSA)] and the Balcones Canyons Preserve walked the trail in December and in early January to investigate each repair location and get input and suggestions from all of the stakeholders present. The general consensus was agreed upon to not lose the challenging aspects of the trail, maintain the trail as a high intermediate to expert level trail both for motorcycles and mountain bikes, pedestrian/pet use should not be allowed, the trail and the repair areas need to be sustainable, correct ‘fall line’ issues related to repair areas, repairs should appear as natural as feasible, all extreme drops should be constructed to allow both an expert and an intermediate line thus allowing easier passage and discouraging the creation of ‘cheater’ or bypass trails (which are prohibited and need to be eliminated).
AY had originally planned to start the construction project on February 4, 2013 with an on-site crew leader orientation day during the last week of January. AY had some schedule changes and were able to get on the site for orientation on January 22 and began full on site work on January 23. Currently AY has allocated four crews to the project with two working MWF and two working TTF schedules. The contracted work is required to be complete by March 1, 2013 and the extra days at the beginning of the schedule will allow more work time to complete the 28 locations.
The crews are currently working near the end of the trail and will be progressing in a clockwise direction. It is the goal of the work to try and allow safe and easy passage by the trail users while the rebuild is underway by allowing travel through the numerous ‘cheater’ trails where possible. As soon as the work is complete on the repair, the crew will work to close off and/or eliminate the ‘cheater’ trail after the main trail is reopened. There will be times when the trail may have to be closed completely or a rider may have to dismount to travel through the work area. Please be courteous, cautious and respectful around the crews working on our trails. Also please take extra caution around the worksites on the weekends, chances are that the barricading tape and signs will be vandalized and the drops and obstacles that you have been accustomed may be changing.
AY is doing a great job with the work to date and have all expectations of competing the project prior to the March 1 deadline. Hopefully the trail riding community will understand the need for this work and respect the efforts of everyone involved to maintain these amazing trails and help them to remain open and ride-able for the next forty years. It is understood that the some of the nuances of the trail will be different and that some of the challenges will change. But also please keep in mind that the trail has been constantly changing since it was created. Give the repairs a chance to settle in and everyone can begin picking their new favorite lines! KEEP RIDING!!

The offer has gone out to the Parks Dept from the stakeholders (AMSA, CTTA & ARR), but so far they have declined citing liability issues.

Regards,
David
