I'm currently riding a CRF230F, which works pretty well at CP. I'm 6', 200lbs. The lower seat and good low end performance lend themselves well to launching up the tough lines at CP without the risk of falling too hard and far. I've been kicking around the idea of getting a bigger bike for CP and the AMSA family trail rides.

I want to ride, not work on a bike frequently so reliability is a key factor. For this reason and the desire to not mix gas, I'd prefer to stay with a 4 stroke. I thought about the CRF250X, but the valve issues scared me away. Too bad Honda appears to have mucked this one up. The relatively low seat height would have been a plus. Lately I've been thinking about a KTM 250 XCF-W. I've heard that the low end is not that great, but apparently this was improved with the '08 models. I'm concerned that the low end may not be responsive enough to help launch me and the bike of the bigger ledges at CP.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
David

David,

Mixing gas isn't so bad - it's certainly a lot easier than adjusting valves and changing oil/filters all the time!

I'm biased, but I'd highly recommend a KTM 300 for technical riding. It'll tractor up just about anything w/o breaking a sweat, haul ass when you want it to, and is as reliable and low maintenance as dirt bikes come. Oh yeah, I have one for sale! wink

When I bought it, I had a KTM 450 XC, and a Sherco 2.9 which I bought mainly to ride City Park. First time I tried City Park w/ the 300 XC-W, it did so well that I decided to sell the Sherco (I wasn't really into the traditional trials-type stuff as much). I also sold the 450, since it was only getting ridden about 10-15% of the time, since the 300 has a much better riding/wrenching time ratio, is much lighter, and less tiring to ride.

Hi Chris,

Small world. I think that's my car next to you on your first photo from one of the AMSA family days.

Thanks for the offer, but I like to take the hard lines at CP and think I would destroy the fat exhaust on the 2-stroke KTM's (I just broke the chain guide on my bike the other day at CP).

David

i ride(and crash, drop and catapult)my 300 there all the time, pipe never seems to get too banged up,low end is great 4 climbing the hards, light and nimble, and the smell of two-strokes cant be beat.having ridin a crf 250x as my first bike,i didnt like it too much, battery under the seat made it very top heavy and hard to corner right, and till i rode the 300 didnt realize how easy and fun that bike is to ride.Im on my second one now and Chris keeps good care of his bikes,if my pockets reached deeper i'd be on that bike like me all over a tall boy of PBR.

+1 a 250+cc smoker is the best tool for CP for a skilled rider. I take the hard lines too, and have ridden most of the other good options there too (XR250, CRF250X, etc).

I may have to add a 2 stroke to the consideration list, but an e-start button is a must for my bad knee. Looks like some of the newer KTM's have the magic button, but not Chris' '07 300XC-W.

Thanks,
David
