I took my son's friend riding with us this weekend. About 2 laps into his ride his shift lever quit doing anything. The clutch still works but when you pull up or push down on the lever it moves but doesn't shift the gears. Not sure as I'm not real familiar with this bike, bent shift fork? Is there a spring inside? Thanks for any ideas.

We had a '99 KX100 that did the same thing. The shift shaft broke and would not turn the shift drum. So you could not change gears. New shift shaft assembly fixed it. We had a repair manual and followed the steps to make the repair. The only hard part of the repair was removing the clutch hub - requires a tool to hold the hub.

It sounds like the shifter mechanism, or even a bent shift fork. A slight over-rev can cause this pretty easily.
