The Fun race was just that, the OK Corral Snack Bar baked a giant "Celebration of the Series" cake that most everyone got a small piece of. Following the annual Awards presentations, the races were topped off with a visit from Motorcycle Hall of Famer and previous American Motorcyclists Association Grand National Champion - National #1 Mike Kidd. Mike's focus for the night was working as crew chief for his son Randy Kidd. Popular motorcycle announcer Dr. Jack Rhodes caught up with the two, changing gearing following the first of two hot lap sessions, on Randy's #72n production Honda CRF-450 in their pit area . Mike looked right at home in the historic OK Corral, coming from a background of short track racing.
Jack spent ten minutes interviewing Kidd, who is the current director of AMA Pro Racing Dirttrack in the U.S. Rhodes, who announced for years at Ross Downs, is very familer with Mike Kidd having watched him grow from a novice to an expert in a short number of years at Ross Downs, and served as the trackside announcer for a number of events produced by Mike Kidd over the past years. The signature Jack Rhodes interview circled around the new production singles class and the ablilty of a larger number of riders to adapt to dirttrack riding a motorcycle familier to them.
This is a snippet from the interview from my memory. Kidd explained that taking a rider from AX, MX, Cross Country, GNCC, Super Motard and other discliplines and setting them on a dirttrack motorcycle in a custom dirttrack frame made the transistion more difficult than incorporating the production chassis class. The learning curve is reduced and we look to see a cross over of more riders into dirttrack. An example of a rider crossing over is #21a Johnny Lewis who came from AMA Supermoto and sat in the main event at Daytona finishing a respective 13 in night one and 12th in night two. Kidd explained the first race of the season held at Municipal Stadium in Daytona, Florida proved that having the entire field on similar bikes created a level playing field and the lap times of the top 30 were much closer than in years past. Creating closer lap times creates closer competition and a more entertaining show for the fans. Kidd went on to say that the youth bikes today resemble the larger 250s and 450s so the transistion for the Grass Roots riders that compete in regional racing such as the AMP Outlaw Winter Natioanls will be more comfortable with the production singles.
Kidds first motorcycle race he attened was produced by Al Johnson in Yukon, Oklahoma. Ed Johnson just so happend to be the promoter that ran the Indoor motorcycle races at Harrah, Oklahoma and the Coke Syrup Indoors at the OKC State Fairgrounds and the famous races held at DeAnza Raceway in Jenks, Oklahoma. As a child on vacation with his family, Mike Kidd spotted a poster in the Arbuckle Mountain area about the races in Yukon, he won out by erging his parents to take him to the race and the rest is motorcycle hall of fame history. http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/halloffame/hofbiopage.asp?id=100 A strong lightning storm with large thunder heads disrupted what was set to be a barn burner of a night at the OK Corral Indoor arena Saturday April 18th. With the majority of other outdoor racetracks closed in Oklahoma the focus was on the races indoors at the OK Corral. At 8:06pm the power grid in the area was stuck by lightning and we lost electrical power to the building. A call to OG&E had no set time for repair, but they were working on restoring the power. An electrician was called in and several attempts to locate a generator large enough to power the lights resulted in a timing issue. The race was called complete for the classes that ran heat races, and the remaining 9 classes of the 24 heats were re-scheduled to run prior to the opening round of the series in October.
The Open Pro Singles class looked super strong, with riders showing up from three states. Kenny and Jesse Castle out of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Randy Kidd out of Azle, Texas and the local Outlaws from Oklahoma were set to raise the roof on the barn. Kidd looked strong in hotlaps, coming back from a nasty multiple injury suffered on a moto-cross track that involved damage to his spine, and the worst injury to his ankle. A gearing change improved his speed in the second hot lap session, and Crew Chief Mike Kidd explained they were even better for the heat race. Kinda reminds me of another indoor race held in Oklahoma where famous names come to race and wrench and just have some down in the dirt fun!
Racing action for the Fun Race always to develop into a super cool atmosphere with low pressure and everyone having conversations and fun enjoying what they all love best, dirttrack racing.
