I need a little help guys. I recently purchased a 1979 Chevy K10 4X4 pickup with a 350 Turbo tranny and what appears to be a NP205 with the longer tail piece. The rear output shaft seal was leaking so I decided to change it. When I pulled out the drive shaft and seal Tranny fluid ran out??? I went ahead and pulled the drain plug at the bottom of the TC and all together drained about 5 quarts of “Transmission” fluid out of the transfer case. I am no expert so here are my questions.
1. Was the previous owner (who put the truck back together) an idiot and filled it with tranny fluid?
2. Am I an idiot and it is supposed to have tranny fluid and not gear oil?
3. Although it did not look tainted could there be a seal between the transfer case and the tranny bad that would allow fluid to pass from the transmission to the transfer case, filling it up until it would take no more?

Any help is appreciated.

I owned a really trick '85 Silverado 1500 4x4 back in the '80s and I am pretty sure that transfer case called for automatic transmission fluid. The NP205 is chain driven and not gear driven. Check your owners manual if you have one. Also, check out for TONS of info on the subject. The transmission and transfer case do not share fluid. Good luck!

NP 205 gear driven takes gear oil.
NP 203 chain driven takes 10w40 motor oil.
NP 208 1982 and later chain driven takes atf.

A lot of people are using atf because it lubrcates better. Gear driven takes gear oil chain drive takes 10w30 mtr oil the newer ones atf but i have found the atf causes less problems and lubes a lot better Chry corp. started using atf in their 4 speed trans in the 60s and had a lot less problems then Ford and GM.
