Is there any place at the park to by the off highway vehicle program sticker?

I called today and they told me I had to order it through Austin.

Sound right?

You can get it through the dept of Parks and Wildlife.
The Forest Rangers said they won't go into effect until the fall.

Man I keep getting different signals. I called the park and they said I had to order/have it to ride. I hate to drive 3 hours to ride and be turned away at the gate.

This is the number you need to call.
(888) 361-6908

Don't confuse the "Multiple-UseTrail Pass" with the "off road vehicle sticker program".

The Forest Rangers were at our (TRH) April meeting and they explained that all you need right now was the "Multiple-UseTrail Pass".

I’m trying not to play the heavy-handed bureaucrat here, but I want to put the facts out so that the real requirements of the Texas OHV program are known. I don’t anyone to be issued a citation because they were unaware of the requirements of the Texas OHV program.

To ride at any of the OHV venues in Texas located on any city, county, state or federal lands, where OHV is legal, you must have a current Texas OHV decal properly mounted on your trail machine or you risk getting a citation. This includes the Sam Houston National Forest.

It's not up to the USFS to say you don't need the Texas OHV decal to ride in the Sam Houston NF. This requirement comes from Texas State Law, specifically chapter 29 of the Parks & Wildlife Code.

This law was passed in the 79th Legislature, in the spring of 2005 as House Bill 1311. It became law on 1 September, 2005, the law became effective on 1 January 2006. Texas Parks & Wildlife gave a “grace period” for issuing citations from 1 January 2006 until 1 January 2007. The grace period is now over by nearly two months.

Any commissioned law officer can issue a citation for a class C misdemeanor if you are caught riding without a Texas OHV decal on lands where they are required. Failure to comply with the provisions of this law constitutes a Class C misdemeanor and could result in the OHV operator being issued a citation. Fines for this offense range from $25 to $500.

You can find more information on to the Texas OHV program at:

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/ohv/index.phtml

You can find more information on riding OHVs in the Sam Houston NF at:

http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/texas/recreation/sam_houston/multi-use_trail.shtml

Ok, I have not gone to read all that at those two links. I am wondering though if anyone knows for sure that if you have a street legal motorcycle you are exempt from having to have the OHV sticker?

Thanks,
Vaughn

Yes, at this time any street legal vehicle does NOT require a Sticker.
But you can buy one anyway....your $8 will go to building and maintaining trails in Texas....every $8 counts

I just called 512-389-8917, purchased them over the phone & they're on the way, pretty simple.
Like Laura said, good cause! Just like AMA, I heard people saying this weekend what do you get for that price, oh just maybe the right to ride, thats all!

Bought ours over the phone from the 512 389 8917.The lady said they would take 5 to 10 working days to arrive. If you need them quicker than that Wild West Honda in Katy have them but you have to go there in person - they wouldn't mail them to me.

Trust me they are ticketing! I got a couple tickets and narrow escaped the sticker thing on the bike.
(go read the "Federal officer writing tickets at Kelly Pond post" on TRH .
In responce to a post above, the Rangers that attended the meeting and said you dont need a sticker right now at Sam Houston NF are not up to date. Curently some rangers/officers are not doing it but if you have luck like me you will run into the one that likes to bust you for whatever he can.

All "OFF ROAD" vehicles need stickers, unless you have a curent streetlegal license plate your going to need a sticker, that goes for motorcycles, ATVs, even 4x4 trucks/jeeps. No plate, then you need sticker.

Kurt, you don't need the sticker on your DRZ, and LMK before you hit the forest!
