Guys I just bought a 1990 Jeep Wrangler S 4x4. I would like to make a rock crawler out of it. This is just a toy off road only. I have no clue even what it has other than 4-cyl, 5-spd, Here is a pic. Where do I start?? I wont even see the Jeep for 22 more days because I'm still stuck here in Iraq. It looks to have a small lift and 33" tires. It has only the bikini top but I have a soft top off my 98 Sahara because I replaced it with a hard top. Would this top work on the 90 model?? Other than changing out the engine what would you do starting off????

Pull that thing down to the frame and start building it back up with good quality parts.....

Comp cut the Rear Panels and Tube Fender the front.
Build a Six point cage that attachs to the frame, make sure the belts and seat attach to the cage also.
Purchase a set of Dana 60 or Dana 44 axle for the drivetrain changeover.
rebuild the spring mounts with 1/4 plate steel, setup a frt shackle reversal, and a custom belly skid.
make or by some custom rock crawler shorty bumpers.
You need to run atleast a 37inch tire with beadlocks.
Winch for the front 8000lbs will do.
Setup the JEEp for a SOA suspenion.
Need a goos crawl ratio... Might try a Klune 4:1 in between the tranny and transfer. You can easliy push the motor forward for clearance.

I not sure what you want your rig to do?

These are a few things most guys try and do over there JEEP ownership.

Might be easier to give you some help if you can tell us what you plan on using the JEEP for and how much you got to spend... Because the Just Empty Ever Pocket is now yours.....

L8R,

Ok as for money not a worry. But this is just a toy. I would like for it to go where ever I point it..LOL Isn't that what ever 4X4er wants?? Something that will hang with most people on the trail no straight up rock cliff climbing for me but more than where you could take a stock jeep. Ok now I've not had my eyes on it yet only pics I'm still in Iraq. It looks to not have Factory axles (look at the pic) once I get home I'll take it down and see what the Axles are. I have always had 4x4s my first was a 79 ford with 10" lift and 42" tires and have had many jeeps, Toys, fj40s in my time but never one just set up for the off road. I have 3) 8000lb warn winches so that's not a prob. Now you say 37" tires is the 4 banger going to move those?

Well from the pics you got.. It is still pretty much factory.... If all you want is a good trail rig then I got some ideas you might like... Now if its a true trailer queen and will only see 4 diamond and up trails you will need a completely different game plan....

Basically for a Good Trail Rig... Here is a few good items :

Winch
Lift 4" SUA or SOA with 1.5" Springs ( Rubicon Express or Alcan Springs )
Boomerang Shackles Frt & R
Frt & R RS9000 Shocks
SYE Kit & Rear CV Driveshaft
2" Tube 1 ton Custom Frt DriveShaft
Quality Shorty RockCrawler Bumpers Frt & R
Rock Sliders or Rocker Knockers
Sport Cage or Full Cage
CB
Dana 44 axles Frt & R w/Lockers & 5.13 gears
Tera-Lo kit for NP231 case w/2 lo
Engine Skid atleast 3/16 steel
Tank Skid atleast 3/16 steel
Frt & R Diff guards
(5) 34" or 35" Tires like LTBs or MTRs
(5) Beadlock Rims Steel
Hilift Jack
Tow Strap, D ring and tree saver
Fire Extingisher & First Aid Kit
Kilby On Board Air System or CO2 Power Tank System
Tube Fenders for the Front
Rear fender guards

These items would make a very nice JEEP if properly built would run GREAT on most all the 3,4,5 Diamonds trails in and around Texas.....

I'd say First, when you get home, find a Jeep club close by, pull off the sway bar disconnects and the chrome side bars, go out with the club and have some fun. You'll get some ideas for other jeeps and build it up. Do it right the first time. Don't shoot the four banger so fast, I've seen a jeep with Unimog axles and tires and the four worked fine.

I agree with the last post, Take the nerf bars off ( they're mounted too low) find a 4WD club in the area and go PLAY. I wheeled a 4 banger for years before pouring a ton of money into it for a v-8 and the rest of the parts that are under it now. Besides, you'll learn more about driving with an stocker that with a bigger more equipped vehicle. Lockers are great but if you learn how to drive without them, you learn how to pick you lines a lot better. Find you a winch for the front and make sure you have tow points front and rear, get you a highlift jack and a GOOD strap and add a CB and a FRS Handheld radio so you can be a part of the discussions on the trail. Then GO PLAY. AS for the soft top you have from the 98, no it will not work for the YJ.

BTW, THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE IN IRAQ!!!

Pull those nerfs off and add a winch and some mud tires. You'll be good to go for a bit. Add a locker and a mild lift, nothing fancy or expensive. Save some $$$ for upgrade axles (Dana 44 or 60) and gears and larger tires down the road. Gearing can help tackle the underpowered 4cyl engine. If you go with a new engine, swap trans and transfercase at the same time.

Have fun with a local 4x4 club!!!

Super rigs can be built without spending a mint even if cash is NO problem. Engines, transmissions, transfer cases, axles, etc., can all be found used and reasonably priced on various local and national web sites. This is how I'm building mine. I bought a V-8 engine/tranny/T-case all for $200, Ford 9" 31-spline, big bearing 58-1/2" rear axle for $100. These parts are just a start, and there will be MUCH more money and time spent before completion, but you can assemble a top notch rig without dragging it to Sunray and dropping $40K into it. (I wish I could afford to do that, they are great!!) It would almost certainly be necessary to have some mechanical skills , or have friends that do. Join a local club. They are great resources for tech advise and most set aside days (Wrench-A-Thons) to get together and work on everyone's junk. Just my .02. Good luck.

for trail only keep it simple.
350 sbc can be a bolt in with an advanced adaptor kit
350 turbo
205 twin stick
link the front with blue torch stuff (quality and ease of installation)
link rear also with BTF kit
stretch wheelbase to 120 inch
get a front and rear set of rockwells duece/half axles
hummer h1 wheels and new centers
44 inch swampers or boggers
SAW air shocks (front/rear)
PSC steering for the front
and have a good cage done.

All this can be done for around 5 grand if your paitient and look around. Most of the work can be bolt in if you want but would be cheaper if you can fab stuff.
The reason for the rockwells is CHEAP,READY TO RUN GEARS(6:71) NEARLY UN BREAKABLE
motor choice is cheap and easy
hummer wheels are cheap and new centers are 40 bucks a piece.

cant think of anything else right now
