Great site! Lots of very useful information.

I have a question though... I'm new to motorcycle riding and I'm in the market for a MX bike to learn on. I'm 6'2", 205lbs.. Should I purchase a 125 or a 250 2 stroke?

I'm mainly interested in riding trails and doing some MX, but I'm sure it might take a while before I get into jumping.

Any suggestions or direction would be greatly appreciated.

I'm 6'0'' and i ride a yz125. If you want to do trails, you might want a 250f or 450f. I don't ride trails very well on my 2 stroke. The 4 stroke will have the bottom power to get you up steep hills going slow.

I too am 6', only weigh about 175 (not bad for 40 eh'). I have a YZ 125, and a RMZ 250. The 125 takes a ton of work to make it sream while the 250F is way more forgiving. When it come to the MX track I prefer the 125. While out on the trails or hill climbing the 250F is the way to go. Just put a 167 big bore kit in the YZ, going to get to test it this weekend, cant wait.

No matter what bike you choose, just make sure you feel comfortable

At 200+ pounds, the minimum bike for you should be a 250F. A 250 two stroke or even possibly 400-426-450 4 stroke could be the right choice. I prefer 4 strokes, but lots of folks swear by their oil burners.

As far as reliability, we have a 99 YZF400 that has been bulletproof. I've also had 01, 02 and 04 KTM 520/525's, and all have been great. I have several friends with Honda CRF 450 bikes that have had many valve troubles.

Are you buying new or used? What's your budget? What experience on bikes do you have? Those answers might help narrow your choices some, as well.

For instance, if you are brand new to motorcycles of any kind, a Honda XR400 might be best for you. Smooth friendly power, great offroad suspension, extremely reliable and easy to maintain. Can be used for lightweight MX, as you improve your bike skills.

My 2 cents is 250 four stroke. Very forgiving to learn on but will rip when you get better.
Great fun and reliable.

Another good bike would be a KTM 300 exc. although it a 2 st it rides like a 4st. Super smooth
and lots of power on the top end.

I agree with Tominator- a rider over 200 lbs will go through top ends rapidly on a 125. We big boys need a bike with beans! At 230 lbs, I feel most at home on a 250- though I did ride a KDX200 for several years and loved it (once I got the suspension dialed in for my weight and riding style). In fact, I used to sail that KDX through the air pretty good.

First of all, welcome to the world of offroading...it is nothing short of a blast...and since you say you are new, in the interest of your safety I would have to suggest if you plan to buy before you ride, you start with a smaller cc bike and then work up from there.

A 125cc 2-stroke or its equivalent 250cc 4-stroke are very powerful and will easily move 175 lbs around. If you decide after learning the ropes to move up a few notches, you can do it when you are ready and still have all your body parts intact.

Also, you should consider joining a local offroading group in your area, get out and meet some folks and chances are some of them would let you throw a leg over a bike or two to see if it is a fit. I know being a member of AMSA I have been on a lot of bikes and it is always nice to try something before you outlay your cash.
