I have a buddy with a 77 CJ. (Same guy that has my YJ) He cranked it up the other day and let it idle while he got something out of the barn. It was sitting there purring like a kitten, then it died. He found the coil wire, from the distributor to the coil, popped off, and a starter wire off. He plugged them in and turned the key and all it does is turn over and fire, but it won't actually start and run.

It's getting fuel, and fires like it wants to start. I actually got it to start one time and run for about 20 seconds. It idled very rough and sounded like it was missing when I reved it up....then it died.

I know there are about 50 things that "could be" the problem. But I was hoping maybe someone has experience or a good idea before we start trying to fix it....

Well the distributor, coil, etc. all had good spark, so we took the electronic ignition out and used one off an 87 Ford truck sitting out in the pasture, and it fired right up.

So we took it out to the sand pits outside his back gate to try it out. I followed in my YJ. The CJ ran perfect, so did Bonsai, but I ended up stripping the teeth on the rear locker damn EZ locker.

Oh well, nuther excuse for an upgrade

Yo Mark.... If you ever end up with a D30-35 combo out of one of them rigs you build up, let me know. I need to upgrade with superior axle kits and full lockers, but I think it might be cheaper to put it all in a set of un-abused axles rather than completely rebuilding mine.

Yea, Yea, I'm just chatting with myself.

I'm wondering... I know you can flip a stripped EZ locker to make it work a while longer. I wonder if you could weld the 2 sides together????

No such thing as cheap when you're talking about mods on a trail rig.

Well.... cheap would be welding the side gears on a stripped locker. Just a temporary fix so I could keep wheelin while I look for replacement axles.

When I do locate new axles, I'll have to re-gear, add lockers, new springs, perches, steering, brakes, lines, drive shafts, and a lot of welding. That ain't cheap.

Right now , the rig is nothin but cheap. But I know how do drive cheap rigs, so it works for me. I built it cheap so I could be wheelin instead of building. Now I'm fixin instead of wheelin. So it's time to start rebuilding.
