I took my boys, ages 8 and 11, to a monster truck show. They were more impressed with the dirt bike guys doing their flying through the air stunts and now want to get into riding. None of us has ever ridden. While I save money for three motorcycles, I bought them a Panterra 49cc mini dirt bike from apep Boys. At $400, the price was right. I know it is a piece of junk(you get what you pay for) that they could never race on, but is a good, cheap way for them to get the feel of an engine under them. Of course they don't like the idea of taking turns and want to ride together.

Being new to the sport, I have lots of questions.
This is the first forum for kids dirt biking that I have come across. Are there any other good ones I should be reading?
We live in El Paso, Tx. Where is the nearest places to ride/race?
The helmet we got them is a full, racing type that covers the chin. They don't like it because of the weight. They are like bobble heads. Are there different weight helmets or do they just have to get used to it.
I am 44, 200 lb, 6'1". Years ago, My brother had a Honda 600 street/trail. He says it is way to big for the dirt. What is the smallest bike someone my size should go for? I am thinking about a 200-300cc.
Is there much difference in price between the major brands for comparable bikes of the same year? Any brand I should stay away from?
What are your opinions of these Panterras and other clone bikes that are all over Ebay?
Thanks,
Rob

The above post is mine. I just read that many folks won't reply to Anonymous posters so I am now registered.

You may also want to post this in The Pits forum. You'll probably get more of a response & great advice from all of the guys over there.

Rob:

You state in your e-mail that what you bought at Pep Boys was just "junk". I bought one of the 90 cc bikes for my daugher to learn to ride on. It is actually a pretty nice little bike.

I did some research into the "Panterra" bikes. They actually have Honda motors. Let me explain.

Honda sold a bunch of their engine tooling to a company in China a few years back. China has no patent law, so they immediately began building mini bikes and cycles with the tooling. THe result is the bike you and I bought. THey are sold in the US under several different names, including "Panterra", "Panda" and several other names.

The motors and running gear are all Honda. You can get any parts you need at the local HOnda dealer. They do cut some corners on the gas tanks; you don't get a metal tank that the kid can dent up.

Otherwise, I think they are a pretty neat little machine.

You also ask if there is a certain size. The 125cc bike is probably big enough. THey actually sell a pretty slick one at Pep BOys for $999

The Crf 230 and 150 are pretty nice bikes. My mom really likes her 230. My brother rode a honda xr80 for about two months, then he got to fast for it and had to get a kx65. He was like 9 at the time. I don't think I really know any bikes thaqt may work for your kiddos. I know I had a tt-r 125l for a short period of time. It's a good bike to start riding on.

Mike,
Thanks for the info. Nice to see someone on here from our neck of the woods. When and where do you usually ride? Maybe we will cross paths sometime.

thanks for the info. I was looking for stuff about the same bike and I could only find that panterra is somehow associated with nikota tool company. where did you find the info about the bike (it is a honda clone)? I would really like to check it out. Thanks!

They seel the "Panterra" mini-bikes at Pep Boys stores here in the SouthWest. They sell a 49cc, a 90cc, and a 125 cc.

The 49cc bike sells for $499; the 90 sells for $699 and the 125 goes for $999. They don't really have the whole quality control of Honda, but mechanically, they are identical.

I have seen the same bikes sold under the "Panda" name plate, as well as several with Chinese names that I don't remember.

Rob:

My daughter usually just rides in the desert behind our house. There is a place up in Alamogordo, NM on the street that heads toward La Luz NM. We pass it on the way to my mother-in-law's house. The local kids all ride their dirt bikes there. You can't miss it; there is a huge set of trails over a bunch of eroded dirt.

Stay in touch.

Is the 125cc Panterra dirt bike street legal in most states or does it need to be registered?

We just put a 49cc panterra dirt bike on hold for my 6year old son who is as tall as an 8 year old, and the bike seems a little big. They had it in a cage so we were unable to feel the real weight of the bike. Is this bike too heavy in your opinon for a 6year old? And I thought I read something about needing to be 16 and have a drivers licence in PA for a 4 stroke engin, is this true?

Unfortunately, most of the Honda shops have evolved into outfits where they can only look up a part number on a computer.

Try one of your local m/c shops that sell salvage or generic biker stuff. They should be able to match up the parts for you. I have not yet needed to look for parts, but they should be pretty easy to find.

Also, they should have given you a 1-800 number to call for parts when you bought the bike. If they didn't, go back to the Pep Boys and have them give you the phone number.

When my dog ate the seat on my 49cc, we called Panterra to buy a new one. They got such a kick out of our story of what happened to it, they sent us a new one for free. It took a month to get here but for the price, we can't complain.

That 125cc looks pretty nice. And it is street legal as it has lights and signals. The 49cc does not.

My 8 yr old actually looks a bit large for the 49cc, but it is a good size to learn on.

I don't believe you need a licence to ride off road in Pa, and the 49 can not be ridden on road.

Mike, I will check it out, thanks.

Hi Mike C.

I am about to buy a Panterra 90cc for myself.
Do you think it will last longer than one yr?

I don't see why it shouldn't. There are still thousands of those old Hondas with the same motor from the 60's and 71's still putting around.

It should last for years with proper maintenance.

Dale:

We were missing a couple of small parts on my daughter's bike when we picked it up. Tell the folks at Pep Boys and they should get it for you.

Also, I can't find a Panterra website. They gave me an owner's manual with the bike that had a 1-800 number you can call and get parts, etc. The folks at that number should also be able to send any missing parts.

I just got a 90cc pant. didnt ride it much yet but Im 5'7 165 and it pulls me around pretty fast for a little bike. Wheelies and such. starts easy. speed control screw for kids. the weak link seems to be the clearance of the exhaust pipe and kickstand. Im cutting off the stand and welding one up higher, that should give me another 2 inches of space. The pipe is going to get bent though, I can see it!! there is no frame in front of the engine either, so no going up curbs, over big bumps or logs and such. its more of a "field bike". we love it though!!!!!!!!! they gave us an 800 number for parts and such, don't have it on me.

Mike C in Las Cruces, NM, were you able to register your Panterras as dual sport (street legal) in NM?

Nope; it's way too small for that. It is strictly off-road.

No lights, battery, etc. Plus, it only goes about 30 mph wide open!

Hey Rob,
With the helmet problem you can get them a neck roll. My kids both wear them. My 6 year old had the bobble head thing going and it helped him. My 10 year old wears one now cause she rides a YZ85 and I don't want her to break a coller bone. Check out tccra.org you may can find some help on there too

hey my name is kyle i live in FL i have a panterra 125 that i purchused from pepboys. Its my second one i got a new one because the first one`s engine bloo but my second one isnt the best either. Ive only owned it for a month and broke in the motor as the book instructs and ive followed the mamnites scedule also. havent been rough with it at all just trail and street use and it always has a problem. ive replaced a rear tire i had to costom make new back sprocket bolts i had to reweld and toughen several weak parts on it and purchase new headlight and taillight also front fender. I recomend you spend the extra money on a reliable and tough honda crf-230 or a ttr-230 so it would last long be durible and be perfict for your size theres also a world of parts you can purchase for them. trust me dont waste your money on any off brand motorcycle. I regret every second of it.
